• Second blog post due. Suggested topic: A personal experience
of transportation in the city.

• Third blog post due. Suggested topic: A personal
experience of art or music in the city.
Friday 28 February
• Fourth blog post due. Suggested topic: Is New York a good
place to live?
• Read for today Walt Whitman's "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry."

Friday 7 March
• Fifth blog post due. Suggested topic: Compare New York to
another major city you have lived in or visited.
Friday 14 March
• Sixth blog post due. Suggested topic: A famous New Yorker
you admire or find interesting. Do not attempt a full bio—instead, write
about why the person is interesting to you, and include some pertinent facts
about his/her life.
• In class we will have a mid-term exam.
Friday 21 March
• Seventh blog post due. Suggested topic: Respond to a
movie about New York; how well does the film capture the spirit of the city?
• Bring in a proposed topic for your research paper: one
paragraph. This paragraph should be typed and printed out. The professor must approve your topic.
(Mid-term grades will be posted on Monday, 24 March)
Friday 28 March
• Eighth blog post due. Mandatory topic: Write about three
sources you have found for your paper. Tell us how each source sheds light on
you topic. The three sources should be listed at the end of the post using the
MLA Works Cited format.
Friday 4 April
• Ninth blog post due. Mandatory topic: Choose one part of
your research paper outline, and write that section as a blog post.
Friday 11 April
• Tenth blog post due. Mandatory topic: Choose one
part of your research paper outline, and write that section as a blog post.
Friday 18 April : No class—Spring Recess
Friday 25 April
• Eleventh blog post due. Mandatory topic: Choose one
part of your research paper outline, and write that section as a blog post.
• Read for today the final exam long reading [TBD].
Friday 2 May
• Twelfth blog post due. Mandatory topic: Write about
something you discovered while researching your paper that you chose not to include in the final draft
because it wasn’t directly relevant to your research question.
Friday 9 May
• Final research paper due.
16-23 May: Exam week
