New York
City is one of the most popular cities in the world. It is filled with diversity and culture. When you walk the streets of New York City,
you can witness firsthand how cultural diffusion makes New York City what it is
today. In one block there's a Chinese
restaurant, a Pizzeria, and a bodega all sharing sidewalks. But although it has these different dynamics,
New York City is not a good place to live.
It is very expensive to live in New York City. According to the American Psychological Association,
studies show that in 2012 residents in New York City have high stress levels
(APA).
Comparing
New York City to other cities in the nation, it is probably the most expensive
city to live in. It is very hard to find
a decent apartment in the city that won't leave you broke every first of the
month. An author explains that
"...New Yorkers are shelling out a media price of $3150 for a cramped
one-bedroom, and it's hard to find a true two-bedroom in Manhattan for under $1
million" (Otis). Most people in the
city cannot afford an apartment let alone pay over $3000 a month for one. That can explain the high population of
homeless people in the city. New Yorkers
are spending an abundance of money to
survive here and it’s wearing them out.
New York
City is a highly populated town where everyone is moving like tightly packed
cells. In a daily commute, residents
hassle the headaches of traffic on the roads and sidewalks. The American Psychological Association
explained that, “…New Yorkers report an average stress level that surpasses the
national average” (“Stress by City”). Money
is a big stressor for everyone and is continuing without a relaxation response.
When
stress is constant, it can cause damage to the body. And if the body becomes sick, then the body
better have its wallet ready.
