Growing up, I’ve traveled to a bunch of states that all seem
to look the same. Dominican Republic has a bunch of cities, but my favorite
city is Puerto Plata. The memories created in Puerto Plata tattooed to the
inner walls of my long-term memory. Sometimes I close my eyes and I can taste,
smell, see and feel Puerto Plata. I remember when I first arrived on the
foreign soil and the warm atmosphere hugged me and slowly made my hair frizz
up. New York City and Puerto Plata are so different from each other; New York
City is very fast paced, Puerto Plata on the other hand is very calm and slow
paced.
The only time you see animals in
New York City is in the zoo; you can find animals anywhere in Puerto Plata. My
aunt’s neighbor has a huge house and a bunch of chicks, hens, and other animals
in his backyard. The only pet my next door neighbor, in New York, has a dog and
a bunch of mice. Lucky, I don’t have any unwanted pets in my apartment. In New
York, I can actually bathe in warm, hot or cold water; in Puerto Plata you have
to go out and fill up buckets of cold water to take a shower. I use to hate
taking cold showers because I hate cold water. In Puerto Plata, you have to
know how to speak Spanish fluently; New York City, on the other hand, you can
easily find someone to translate conversations for you. Puerto Plata isn’t as
diverse as New York City; most of the people there are Dominican. In Dominican
Republic, there are a lot of power outages, especially when it rains and thunders. The only
time I remember having a power outage in New York City was in 2003 (Northeast
blackout of 2003). I like Puerto Plata way better than New York City because
the weather is warm, the beaches are cleaner and the people are more kind. Puerto
Plata is just so beautiful and so different from New York City. Eventually, I
will visit Puerto Plata again.
