You Really Need A Car
The Opportunity presented itself in the winter of the early 90's. I relaocated to Washington State where I was offeed a state job in the Health field. The location of the job was two cities from where I resided. I resided in the city of Tacoma which was prodomantly caucasion there was very little diversity in my neighborhood. The first few months from arriving, it was extremly difficult because I did not know anyone and I did not know how to get around. Also, I found out that anywhere you wanted or needded to go, it required the neccesity of a vehicle because during this time Washington State did not have a subway sysem. Either you would have to drive or wait on the gravel with on going cars passing because most neighborhoods did not have sidewalks. Not to mention there was bus service, but in any event the scheduling was horrible the busses came every 45 minutes and some times if you were waiting for the bus and it was dark, you would often get left because the bus driver was unable to see you.
It rained almost everyday, and outside activities were limited. Your free time which usually was on the weekends would consist of visiting the mall in which yoa were familiar with every aspect of what it intailed, or going out to a bar that you just was tired of going to in general. Entertainment was very scarcs and if there was an event going on, it would be to far to travel to. Working for me was exciting and it offered me an exit as well as fullfilling to help othere who were unable to help themselves.
Living in New York City, in comparison to living in Washington State is extremley different and definitely conveinant in terms of diversity, travel, entertainment, weather and activities. New York City offers a subway system that is accessible anywhere. What ever the weather condition is there's always something you can do, there are many places you can go visit without needing a vehicle, a simple bus or train ride would be easier and more convienant. Mass transit schedules are constant and most of the time reliable. A vehicle is not a necessity in New York City but rather a luxary if you will. In washington State a vehicle is more of a necessity rather than a luxuary when it refers to commuting.
