New York City is the 6th
busiest subway in the world, with an annual 1.6 billion
(Geography.about). Many New Yorkers navigating the subway is second
nature. It is a daily tool that many use to get from place to place.
With about 5 million people daily riding the subway it tends to
attract people from all sorts of places.
I was born and raised in New York
City. Taking the subway is second nature. I use the subway to commute
daily between home and school. In the morning it is always crowded.
Also, it sometimes stinks! That is because homeless people, during the
night time, seek refuge in the subway cart. As a New Yorker we have
all had weird encounters on the subway. There was this one time where
I was coming home from work and I took the 4 line to 125th
street. On the way to 125th street a homeless man came
into the cart. At first I did not pay any mind to him. But then at a
glance I saw that he was half naked! I tried not to look at him but
he kept moving from place to place. All the people on the cart, like
me, and was kinda freaked out. I think he was drunk too. I could
smell a faint sent of alcohol coming from him. He finally settled
down and fell asleep. But that is when things took a turn for the
worst. After he fell asleep he began to take his hand and put it down
his pants! That is when everyone had enough and left the cart. I left
as well. I went to another cart and stood by the door hoping 125th
street would come soon enough. Even after that experience I continue
to take the subways. It is one of the more efficient ways of traveling
through the city.
