New York City is
a place of many cultures. Culture is the foundation on which made
this city an amazing place to live in. People sometimes often think
that they are alone in New York City, but that is not the case. Out
of the 8.3 million people in New York City(NYC) there is someone
bound to have a similar thought, and there often is. This is what
makes NYC so great. The fact that we can easily find people who can
relate to our problems or our hobbies makes is that much better.
The
high school I attended was a very divers place. There were people
from Albania, Yemen, Guyana, South Africa, China, and many other
places. In my four years of attending that high school I've
learned about many different cultures, customs, and religions. One
important thing I have learned was how different yet similar people
from different backgrounds think.
In that high
school I was lucky enough to meet my very good friend. He was born in
America but his parent where from Guyana. When we became friends he
told me where he was from. At first I did not really know much about
Guyana. I have heard of the country before, but I had no idea where
it was or the type of people that lived there. So I did some research
on Guyana. Guyana is a country that is located in South America and is a republican government. In the 17th century it was
colonized by the Dutch and the British. Currently approximately half
of the population is of east Indian decent and 36% are of African
decent. The language they speak is similar to English, but like other
countries they have certain slang word that only other Guyanese
people could understand.
My friend was
amazed at how intrigued I was of Guyana. So one day he took me to
his house in an attempt to introduce me into his culture. I enjoyed
it! Their food was amazing and new. They introduced me to roti and
curry. It was delicious. Ever since then we been on very close terms
with each other.
