A Small World

A Small World

It is fantastic and educational living in the most diverse city in the world. New York City is my home and home to many other people with so many different cultures. Can you imagine a place where everyday you can meet someone so different and actually share similar ideas? Well, I live this life everyday.
I find myself everyday meeting someone new and interesting. There is one story I can share that happened recently. This meeting was meant to be I guess because it happened right after I was assigned this assignment. In my physical education class, for the first day, everyone had to pick a partner and get to know that person while we were jogging together. I have met one of the most amazing people ever. The persons life is so different than mine. One difference is that I'm from New York and never really traveled anywhere besides Puerto Rico and Florida. This person was born in Columbia. Then that person moved to Spain where he/she spent many years living in the heart of Europe. I was told stories of traveling to all sorts of place in Europe like Paris, London, Amsterdam, and Rome. I was in total awe. I did some research on Spain and was astounded by all the things I have seen, such has wine refineries, landscapes, and bull fighting! ("Espana") This person is only twenty four years old and seen most of the world already. Just being in all those environments must be fascinating. That person must see the world so differently then most of us. I would love to travel like that. Anyway, I started asking why did that person move here and when. I love America and proud to be a citizen, but America hasn't been so nice to me. I probably won't come back if I had the opportunity to travel the world like that. The person told me that they grew up in a military family. So traveling was a part of life for them. They eventually was stationed here in New York three years ago and been here ever since. I find it just amazing how a person can be filled with knowledge from different parts of the world. They can speak more than two languages. That must be so much fun. We are two totally different people from totally different lifestyles, but managed to instantly create a bond of friendship. I look forward to many lessons I can learn from this person and hopefully get to share my ideas and beliefs as well.
After we joyfully expressed our differences, we started talking about how we can be similar in many aspects of daily life. We started off with food. I eat a lot of spanish food, considering I’m Puerto Rican. The person started laughing because she eats the same as I do. That person is married to a Puerto Rican. How hilarious is that? Then we started talking about our futures. We are both enrolled in college. We both have a lot of ambition when it comes to making a life for ourselves. It was a pleasant feeling to know that I’m not alone in the world. We are also both in our mid-twenties. I decided to go back to school to change direction in my life. That person just went back to school to change their direction also.
I guess everybody is different in the world. Everybody is different in New York. Although we all may be different, from this experience I have learned a valuable lesson. When you live in the most diverse city in the world, you are already part of the “American Dream”. We all have the same choices in front of us here. It is a "Small World". I love New York and all the different people living here. We all share the sames dreams and pose as a stepping stone for unity, as well as provide a great example for our future generations.
