The lowest station on the 1 train is 191st, in
Manhattan; it is 180 feet below street level (Subways). The first time riding
the subway, without my mom along my side, was the craziest ride and the first
time I learned my way around the subway system with my best friend. At the time
we were adventurous sixth graders and the school blessed us with metro cards
with a few free rides. We decided to begin our journey from Marble hill, hoping
to end up somewhere with bright lights, vivid advertisements slapped on billboards
and friendly new faces.
“Stand
clear of the closing doors, please”, without hesitation we did what the train
conductor said and planted our behinds to the opened adjacent seats in the
train. We decided that the best place to end up was Times Square. We quickly
turned around to look at the map that displayed every possible way to get to
Times Square and figured what trains we should transfer to in order to get to
our destination faster. Before we could figure out our route, three men with
huge drums came into the train and played the instruments beautifully. I closed
my eyes and felt every brain cell dance around and bounce. It seemed as if the
men were speaking to us through the beats their drums spit; I felt the emotions
and passion flow out of the music and slither into our ears as they played for
us. The doors slid open and they walked through them once the train stopped at
145th, with a hat filled with dollars and change. My best friend
anxiously waiting for other surprises to occur as the train continued its way
downtown.
We
finally arrived to Times Square after being harassed by multiple homeless
people for a couple of dollars. Man, was my best friend right about how
beautiful 42nd looked at night. There were so many people from different
races, smiling at us. I never seen so many people on one street, it was
difficult for us to walk around and explore. Times Square was so colorful and
bright; lights all over, forming words and pictures, welcoming us to a place I
would soon call home.
