Last resort

I am a mother of two who loves to try new things! Let’s face it, there is something going on in New York City every single day. Luckily, we have a car, but it wasn’t always like that. For the first few years as a mom I rode the trains. My daughter loved it; me, not so much. New York is known to have rude people (I can include myself in there every now and then), but some of the things I’ve seen while riding the train seem unreal.

Like most children, my daughter wants a seat on the train. I’m smart enough to avoid rush hour with my children, but sometimes you can’t. People see you walking in and won’t even move their bag to give a toddler the seat. That’s when the rude comes out of me!

The MTA employees are worst! A few years back a friend of mine and her daughter accompanied my daughter and I to an event downtown. While pushing my stroller into an almost empty train the doors closed on my stroller. I panicked and began pulling the stroller while yelling at the conductor to open the doors. My friend who got in before me and some riders, who were kind enough to help, began pushing it from the inside. Finally the conductor and I made eye contact and he opened the doors only with enough time for me to pull the stroller out and the train pulled off. According to NyMag “2012 was the deadliest year of fatal accidents on the train”(Martin). There are many benefits to riding the train, but id rather keep it as my last resort. I thank God I no longer ride the train as much as I use to.
