Did I really just witness
this? This question ran in my head all the way home. I was 14 at the time and
was showing my uncle around New York City. We decided to take the D train down
to 34th street to sightseeing and shop at Macy’s which something you
cannot do in the Dominican Republic. The D train is one of the train lines that arrives with average regularity, but its
cars break down more often than those on the average line(D Line Page). When the train stops at 59th
street a tall man rushes in the train before the doors closes carrying a big
box of Pampers Diapers. He barely made it in and before he could settle down
the train moves on towards the next stop. This man was obviously losing his
balance and before he could regain his balance he had fallen on top of the lap
of an irritated train passenger. The man carrying the diaper box apologized
with a Spanish accent about ten times and before he could spit out another
apology the irritated passenger had balled up his fist and swung, punching him
in the face.
All of the other
passengers were in complete shock. The Caucasian
long grayed hair elderly women next to me said out loud “that was uncalled for”.
With just that hit we noticed the blood dripping from his nose unto the box of
diapers to the train floor. My uncle rushed to the injured man and gave him the
tissues he had in his pocket. The aggressor had the audacity to say that his
actions were justifiable. His actions were unjustified when everyone had blatantly
seen that the man tripping unto his lap was just an accident and violence was
not the answer to that situation. That incident made me more aware when going
on the subway systems.
